Artist Statement:
Everything about Pilsen inspired me. The vibrant cultural production and community strength, as well as the landscape, shaped by architecture and immigrant history. I enjoyed documenting its minutiae in paintings and sculptures as much as I enjoyed being a part of a collective voice against immigrant injustice, gentrification, violence and advocate for the arts and youth empowerment.
Relationship to Chicago:
I was born and raised in Pilsen to parents from Michoacan. Exposed at a young age to the artists, activists and educators in the community, I was forever motivated and inspired to produce art and celebrate the community. I connected to artists in Pilsen through the Pilsen art walk as a volunteer, then later as a studio on the map, having founded a gallery/studio with artist Antonio Martinez.
