Alma Dominguez was born in Chihuahua, Mexico but is currently residing in the US. Her exposure to art began at an early age with her father who is a guitarist. She went on to study music at the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua where she got her BA in Music. While attending, she also explored other disciplines such as physiology, performance, and visual arts. She is a psychologist with Masters in Social Science.
Her journey throughout the areas mentioned above have had a major influence on her artwork It explores the boundaries of reality, with a flare of surrealism. Her paintings seek to raise political, social, and environmental awareness.
Newspapers, metal sheets, oils, acrylic, among other materials are her accomplices in the creation of her work which has been exhibited in Mexico, USA, Spain, Italy, Nicaragua, Argentina, Santiago de Chile, and Russia.
Relationship to Chicago:
I have been creating art in Chicago for the last ten years. In 2011, I founded the online collective called Pintoras Mexicanas. It is made by 300 women artists; ten live in Chicago, the majority in Mexico and the rest in other parts of the world. In June 2014, I participated in the creation one of OPEN Center for the Arts and currently I am the Events Director. In two years of existence we have had local and international shows.
