Pedro Vélez is known for his large paintings and photo collages that use social media references and news headlines to express hard hitting commentaries on cultural, political and racial issues. Much of Pedro Vélez’s work merges his interests in journalism and politics into what he calls “visual essays.”
Relationship to Chicago:
I moved to Chicago in 1997 to pursue graduate studies in painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. During my years in Chicago, I made art and became a full time art critic for Artnet, Newcity and the New Art Examiner as well as many other publications. I also have strong ties with Milwaukee.
